What's Your Favorite Hunting App?

Thanks to my 9th grade World Civilization teacher, I learned the 6 P's: Prior Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance.

I've been sampling hunting apps for usability, accuracy and reliability. Which is your favorite hunting app?

This free app is called "Hunt Predictor" and can be used for deer, turkey and waterfowl hunts with a 7-day outlook. Using the GPS feature, I've landmarked multiple tree stand locations and can view them with the following map types: terrain, road map, hybrid, satellite. It ranks weather conditions, pressure, temperature, moon illumination, wind speed and direction, the time of year (whether it's peak time or not), and separates the information easily if you are a morning sitter or an evening go-getter. I haven't verified it's accuracy during a season, but so far it doesn't clunky and it has yet to crash - all good things considering it's a free app.

Hunting App
One other bonus: it ranks each category using deer heads so the more deer heads for a particular category, supposedly the better your chances of scoping a buck. If you base your hunts on weather alone, you can look at how many deer heads (1-5) were given for each of the following categories: pressure, weather, temperature. If the moon is your tactical friend, it's also ranked with deer heads (again, 1-5) and gives you a percentage of moon illumination, say 52% one day and 62% the next day. For those of you who don't want to get all fancy with percentages and numbers, just look at the line graph tab draws a line on a graph telling you camo-up or go back to bed.

Only part I wish was different ( I say this without having verified the accuracy of the app during a hunting season) is better usability when you are switching from one view to the next. I've gotten a little lost inside the app trying to navigate from one particular screen to the next, for example, switching from seeing my tree stand terrain map to the weather predictions for that particular day.

Do you have a favorite hunting app? Give me a holler on Facebook and let me know why it's your fave.

I'm A Patriot

Nicole McClain Meets Ross Perot, Texas
The Flag of Honor was created from the names (names align to form the blue and red stripes) of those who perished in the terrorist attacks of 9/11. The Flag of heroes is created from the names of the emergency personnel who gave their lives to save others in the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Now and forever it represents their immortality. We shall never forget them.

The last stanza of The Star Spangled Banner is a question. We must call on the carpet the 'settlers' who have no desire to become one with our nation, only overthrow it by pocketing themselves in unsociable and disingenuous clusters in our communities.

Am I the only one who feels mocked by their arrival and our tolerance to let them prosper? It is not covert, it is not clandestine, it is transparent if you remove the politically-correct wool from over your eyes. Like an 'undetected' pancreatic cancer growing and infecting, these temporarily-restrained guerrilla radicals will provide a fatal outcome for the beholder, the United States of America. We must fight to defend and protect our freedoms every day in order to sustain our ways of life.

Pull the wool. Open your eyes. Possess no tolerance.

You're Darn Right "I Shoot Mathews"

Nicole McClain Featured on Mathews "I Shoot Mathews"
Thank you Mathews, Inc., a Christian-based company, and the largest bow manufacturer in the world. I love shooting the new Jewel.

"I am a cancer survivor, warrior, and deer hunter from Cleveland, Ohio, recently featured in the September and October issues of Deer & Deer Hunting Magazine.

In my late teens I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. With limited time, I decided I would do things differently,€” not really knowing at the time what that meant exactly.

I became intoxicated by the opportunities of the outdoors at a young age, starting with fishing and camping. I’€™m the youngest of three, the only girl.

I spend all of my time raising money for cancer research and wounded veterans, being an advocate for the outdoors and hunting, and educating consumers on a national level with health, wellness and medical innovations. I’m an outdoor enthusiast dedicating my life to €˜making good€™ on my talents with the time I have left in this life.

Now I share my story to help others struggling with cancer and faith, and work with foundations to raise money for cancer awareness and protect our hunting freedoms and liberties. Maybe that’€™s why God spared my life and I’€™m still here - God has His plans.

And I think it’s mighty nice of Him to let me be around long enough to finally shoot a Mathews, a first-class champion for sure."

Nicole is connected with brands and foundations like Pink Arrow Project, Lumenok, CAMX Crossbows, Deer & Deer Hunting Magazine, 20th Century Fox, J.C. Penney, TGI Fridays, Kellogg’€™s, Coldwater Creek, MARVEL Comics, Susan G. Komen.

Shooting Your Bow: "Train Heavier, Hunt Lighter'

Nicole McClain Shooting the Mathews Jewel
'Train heavier, hunt lighter.' During 'sight-in season,' I recommend increasing the draw weight of your bow. For example, master shooting on-target at 65 lbs. in the off-season. About two weeks before opening day, lower your draw weight to 60 lbs. and hit the range again to confirm accuracy at the lower weight. It will not only help you to draw smoothly and execute with better form and precision, but make it easier to draw when that beauty buck that crosses your hairs.

Nicole McClain Finds A Roadside Deer

Anti-deer hunters: Enjoy your vehicles, homes, shopping centers, and gardens. Cultivation means deer have fewer places to live = accidents = death + road kill.

Movie: Active Shooter

Nicole McClain on the set of Active Shooter with other cast members.
Columbine High School.

Virginia Tech.

Aurora, Colorado.

Household names of places we can never forget -- for all of the wrong reasons.

According to Wikipedia, an active shooter is defined as "... an armed person who has used deadly physical force on other persons and continues to do so while having unrestricted access to additional victims." The definition includes so-called "school shootings" and "snipers," and have caused a paradigm shift in law enforcement training and tactics. Active shooters rarely expect to escape or even survive these situations.

During the on-film pursuit, police officers and SWAT moved through unsecured areas, bypassing the dead, wounded and panicked citizens, to approach and contain the perpetrators. On the set of Active Shooter, with portions filmed at the University of Edinboro in Pennsylvania, here's my interview with host Maija Preddy on the last day of filming.

Audiobook Narration by Nicole McClain

Falling in space. While I would find a trip to the outer edges of the universe intimidating, it would also be most exciting. Although, Robert Heinlein's character has a different tale to tell.

Narrator Ordeal in Space Audiobook | Nicole McClain

"Ordeal in Space" is a science fiction short story by Robert A. Heinlein, originally published in Town & Country, May 1948. It is one of Heinlein's Future History stories and appears in his collection, The Green Hills of Earth.

A spaceship's crewman is called to repair an antenna while his ship is still under spin. He is unable to hold on, despite supreme effort; he drifts away from the ship and has far too much time to ponder things. When he returns to Earth, he is unable to work as a spaceman, and has a fear of heights. After living in fear and sadness for a time, he must face his troubles while rescuing a kitten stuck on the 35th-floor ledge of a building. A good read, or listen.

Nicole McClain Shares Lipid Profile for Heart Month

Fitness Model Nicole McClain Asks You to Know Your Score

Heart Month, sponsored by the American Heart Association, is an excellent time to take a closer look at your cholesterol, nutrition and fitness habits. Heart disease is a leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S.

Here are some tips to help save your life and the lives of your loved ones.

1. Stop Smoking. I've never tried smoking, not even once. I realize this isn't the case for many people and it can be extremely difficult to quit once you've started. Smoking affects your entire cardiovascular system. Combine smoking with obesity, high blood pressure and/or diabetes, and you have a heart recipe disaster.

2. Eat Better. Start looking at food as "Plates of Points" with a budget. It works similarly to your financial budget when you make purchases. "Do I really need to buy this purse? Or should I save my money for an airline ticket to San Francisco?" When reading a menu, it's an opportunity to see each entree as a chance to splurge or save. I ask myself, "Is this something I really want to eat, that I need to have, or should I save these points (calories) for something I really want in the future?" And by future, I mean two days from now or even two weeks from now.

I don't have a limited number of points per day, which is the key to success. So many diets fail because people "cold turkey diet" and cut out everything they love and the cravings become unbearable to stifle.

Saving points is easier than you think. Cut out all unnecessary extras (oil) and use a healthier substitute (lemon). Choose grilled instead of fried with a side of steamed broccoli with lemon, hold the butter and oil please. I use water, lemons or pineapple juice when I cook instead of oil and butter. If I'm baking an entree, I'll use coconut oil to grease the pan but only if absolutely necessary. I look for soups that aren't cream-based and skip pasta completely. When I eat healthier and cut out the unnecessary calories, I don't feel guilty "spending more points" when I really want a slice of key lime pie once in a while. I can eat salads and vegetables any hour of the day, add spices to my grilled chicken, herbs to fish, and venison is almost the healthiest meat next to bison and ostrich.

3. Get Moving. After a 13 hour day, it's difficult to hit the gym. If I can't muster the energy to lift, I force myself to walk outside and get some fresh air. Often times, the breeze and noises of nature motivate me to walk Sir Mogs or take a light jog. Any extra steps you take each day, even 50, get you that much closer to losing weight and that much further away from the couch.

4. Know Your Blood Pressure. About one in three adults have high blood pressure. It's important to know your numbers and take steps to control them if yours are high. I have my blood pressure checked routinely four times a year and track my numbers in a journal, noting whether I had coffee that morning (which can alter the numbers) or if I fasted the night before. This way, I can track any changes, either increases or decreases, before my doctor might ever notice a difference.

5. Reduce Your Blood Sugar. Diabetes is a major controllable risk factor for heart disease. In my last profile my sugar was normal at 84. Ideal levels are between 70 and 100. I've eliminated Starbucks from my diet and take no sugar in my coffee. I save my sugar "points" for menu items I love like key lime pie, chocolate mousse, or a fancy martini. For summer parties, I use Stevia, a natural, sweet-leafed herb that has 300 times the sweetness of sugar and has almost no effect on blood glucose, which means it's great for those with a low-carbohydrate diet, diabetes or diabetes prevention. It is not a chemical, not human-produced, and has been used for hundreds of years in Brazil as  "sweet treat." For you chem nerds, Stevia is heat stable, pH stable, and non-fermentable.

6. Monitor and Understand Your Cholesterol. There are several different components that make up your numbers = Total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, Triglycerides.

My Total Cholesterol Score = 179. Total Cholesterol should be less than 200 to be considered ideal.  179 means I have low total cholesterol which is good. In fact, it's so good, my physician says I don't need to have the test repeated for five years (I'll be back next year though).

My HDL Score = 86. The ideal HDL range for women is greater than 55. HDL is the "good" cholesterol believed to remove excess cholesterol from the body tissues. It is desirable for this to be in the normal or high range. Exercise helps to increase the HDL cholesterol.

My LDL Score = 83. The ideal range is less than 100, though anything under 130 is considered normal. LDL is the "bad" cholesterol because it tends to deposit cholesterol and fat on the artery walls, or atherosclerosis. My level is in the ideal range.

My Triglycerides Score = 50. The normal range is under 150. Triglycerides are the major form of fat in the blood.

7. Heart 411. When researching heart-healthy information, make sure your source is trusted and true. Friends Drs. Gillinov and Nissen, two of America's most respected doctors at Cleveland Clinic, have written a new book, Heart 411. Learn how to sort facts from fiction, about stents and surgery, and the tools you need to live a long and healthy life.

Model Nicole McClain: JCPenney Wedding Advertisement

Every woman wants to be the prettiest girl in the room on her wedding day. Who knew JCPenney had vast wedding collection including wedding and bridesmaid dresses, lingerie and even those fashion form breast petals.
The JCPenney photoshoot was incredibly exciting, trying on different gowns, tiaras, and veils. A girl can never wear too many diamonds, sparklies, and things that shine. At least I can't.

Happy Valentine's Day from Nicole McClain

There was a time and a place for gaining weight, building muscle mass and power lifting. Tis the season of lifting and toning but my 2011 era is to keep it slim and trim.

As you are aware, I'm natural, steroid-free, and conduct a non-cheat style of fitness. I'm so over the steroid users in the gym, male and female, that flaunt vascular arms and unrealistic muscles. If you were natural, I'd be impressed. Discontinuing your cycle of steroids in time to pass the fitness competition drug testing doesn't qualify as all natural either.

Here's a fistpump to every single man and woman busting their glutes in the gym the all-natural-sweat-and-elbow-grease-kinda-way with protein shakes, dedication, motivation and a steroid-free diet plan.

Deer Season 2010 with Nicole McClain

Deer Hunter and Model Nicole McClain from Cleveland, Ohio

Hello my friends in Cleveland! I'm back for deer hunting season 2010 in Cleveland, Ohio. Of course I'll be heading south and over to Pennsylvania for an adventurous hunt, but Cleveland is the where it started and where I will have at least one treestand every year.

The new deer stand this year is somewhat of a Cadillac from Field & Stream. The All-Season Ultimate Ladder Stand will be supporting my huntress self a mere 23' in the air. The adjustable wrap-around camo skirt (skirt, how appropriate) will be a trial this year and I'm already loving the rooftop rain gear so I can hunt even longer regardless of weather. Certainly one of my more elaborate stands so we'll see how it goes.

A few pictures from the season so far:
