There was a time and a place for gaining weight, building muscle mass and power lifting. Tis the season of lifting and toning but my 2011 era is to keep it slim and trim.

As you are aware, I'm natural, steroid-free, and conduct a non-cheat style of fitness. I'm so over the steroid users in the gym, male and female, that flaunt vascular arms and unrealistic muscles. If you were natural, I'd be impressed. Discontinuing your cycle of steroids in time to pass the fitness competition drug testing doesn't qualify as all natural either.

Here's a fistpump to every single man and woman busting their glutes in the gym the all-natural-sweat-and-elbow-grease-kinda-way with protein shakes, dedication, motivation and a steroid-free diet plan.

Hello my friends in Cleveland! I'm back for deer hunting season 2010 in Cleveland, Ohio. Of course I'll be heading south and over to Pennsylvania for an adventurous hunt, but Cleveland is the where it started and where I will have at least one treestand every year.

The new deer stand this year is somewhat of a Cadillac from Field & Stream. The All-Season Ultimate Ladder Stand will be supporting my huntress self a mere 23' in the air. The adjustable wrap-around camo skirt (skirt, how appropriate) will be a trial this year and I'm already loving the rooftop rain gear so I can hunt even longer regardless of weather. Certainly one of my more elaborate stands so we'll see how it goes.

All these promises that we make and we break...why is it that you think people get married? Because we need a witness to our lives. There's a billion people on the planet, I mean what does any one life really mean? But in a marriage, you're promising to care about everything...the good things, the bad things, the terrible things, the mundane things...all of it, all the time, every day. You're saying... "Your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it. Your life will not go unwitnessed, because I will be your witness."

I like standing outside waiting for the storm to come in and catching the rain in teapots (seriously). Sunshine through lots of windows makes me smile. I love animals and I'm a sucker for punching anyone who is mean to them. I think people who make fun of other people deserve to lose an eyeball or some other important body part (maybe a reproductive organ?). Hopefully someday my reproductive organs will produce small persons of my own (insert prayer here) because I want to be the best mom next to my own and I pray everyday for the Lord to bless my family (pets included), friends, and loved ones.

Romance gets me everytime although it doesn't happen often enough and while precedents can be one of the greatest things you ever set, they can also be the most destructive landslides ever begun. I love it when my face hurts from laughing and I plan on blaming any and all wrinkles on that factor. I'm convinced there are illegal addictive stimulants in McDonald's coffee, that men design women's restrooms, pumpkins should be carved twice a year, and fancy underwear are worth every penny.

I'm sentimental to the point it's dangerous and my heart thinks it can fix the impossible. I believe men should be given flowers, women deserve to be adored and fancied, greeting cards should be scented with perfume, and everyone deserves a blanket with silky edges. Pride destroys relationships, stubbornness has bitten me in the @ss, bug bites still hurt me, and I've learned some of the healthiest things are some of the most disgusting things I've ever tasted (next to radionuclide of course).

Weak people are the ones who delight in showing you how weak you are while strong people are the ones who delight in showing you how strong you are. Favors or pardons should never expect something in return and manipulation comes from a callous and malicious heart. If it's a character flaw you need to work on, don't practice on me. Don't mistake my kindness for weakness and please leave your hypocrisy at home. People who copy off of you are just jealous they didn't think of it first and people who try half-@ssed deserve exactly that. Push me down but know I'll fall with my fists swinging and karma will be more of a b*tch to you than I could ever try to be. If you hurt, exploit the privacy of, or abuse me or my loved ones, I'll realize in due time to eject you from my inner circle of happiness.

I'm awesome with a crayon, terrible with wheat, hate paper bags, love hopelessly, play aggressively, sleep lightly, scare easily, quit painfully, shoot impeccably, eat healthfully, exercise regularly, sterilize excessively and when in doubt I say paint it black. My heart says you can miss someone just by the sight of their empty shoes by the door and I crave to be loved for my fantastics and my flaws. Details overload my brain, squares make me happy, and children make me laugh hysterically.

Working out needs to be a part of a relationship rather than a supplement for one. Marriage is taken too lightly, divorce is used too frequently, and I think everyone should try therapy more often. Adoption is for those with hearts from God and a "Mom" or "Dad" is anyone who can love a child as their own. I try relentlessly to make others' "firsts" come true, believe in second chances, and think every person should own camouflage and hunter orange.

People spend too much time on the computer and when Armageddon begins, most won't realize unless it comes in the form of an email. Everyone should have to struggle to pay the bills at least once and relationships are worth fighting for and crying over. Friends who bring flowers should be mailed thank you cards and people who share secrets and don't mind their own business should be exposed naked on the Internet.

I hope God can forgive me of my sins as well as the people I share my life with. I plan on asking God why spiders have to look so creepy, why life has to be so short, why my parents can't live forever, and why the love of our life has to leave. I think my future spouse and I should be the only ones who know about the cabins in Lake Tahoe (I just ruined that secret didn't I? CRAP). I think the word 'CRAP' sounds funny if you say it right and the word 'PORK' is profane. Too many people have too many sexual partners, I wish drugs weren't so readily available and I pray for forgiveness when people use the Lord's name in vain.

Texting should only be used to send love notes during the day and everyone should experience the unconditional love of a dog. If Pilot ever stops making V5 Ultra Fine pens I'll never write again, not that anyone could read my eclectic handwriting anyway. I hope to be remembered as someone who made others feel loved and made their lives special for more reasons than one (or at least one really good one). I want to know how I can be better at everything I do, why windchimes aren't at every street corner, when it will snow in the summer, why meteor showers don't happen more often, and where the heck I left my keys.

The love of a family is a gift no one should have to live without and a good rocking chair is hard to find. Children should believe it matters what they think, a beautiful smile is a bonus, colored toilet paper can cause problems, and having someone give in when they shouldn't can save everything. I can sum up everything I've learned about life in three words: life goes on (what did you think I was going to say? Victoria's Secret Rules?).

Lesnar stopped Frank Mir with a merciless flurry of punches July 11 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, defending his title in the final bout of UFC 100 on a landmark weekend recognizing the best in this proliferating sport.

Lesnar (4-1) stole the show with what happened after his relentless series of right hands into the face of Mir, who handed Lesnar his only loss nearly 18 months ago.

Mir had won their first encounter with a kneebar, and he tried another one in the opening minute of the rematch. The attempt was thwarted by Lesnar, who then spent much of the round smothering Mir from half guard and pounding on him.

What happened next was especially violent. The Ultimate Fighting Championship has carved out a historic corner for UFC 100. Despite the fact that more than 100 UFC shows have gone in the books, the symbolic century mark transforms this July event from usual summer sizzle show to organizational milestone. The Mandalay Bay Events Center plays host to the card Saturday in Las Vegas.

Brock Lesnar, whom I had the pleasure of working, shooting, and chatting with (and his wife - a deer hunter herself no less) is a former professional wrestler and national collegiate wrestler. Brock first saw Octagon action when Frank Mir submitted him in the first round at UFC 81. With a chance at redemption and an opportunity to claim the UFC's undisputed heavyweight title, Lesnar's shocking size, strength and athleticism look to overcome Mir's experience and technique.

At the Arnold Classic, I watched and heard Frank Mir state Brock didn't have a chance and Mir couldn't wait to crush him. On the other hand, Brock was calm, passive and soft spoken - and overwhelming huge. He was a pleasure to meet, work with and I can only hope he enjoyed my company as much as I enjoyed the company of him and his lovely wife.

With a win for Brock, a trilogy is in order; a third fight could propel both to superstardom, as it did with Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture's three-fight saga. However, Mir has come into his own, mentally and physically, after a nearly career-ending 2004 motorcycle accident. Stopping Lesnar again would dispel any referee-related controversies (Steve Mazzagatti cited the Minnesotan for a hit to the back of the head) left over from the first bout.

This exciting clash could help heavyweights capture the imagination of all fight fans, as only their massive frames and larger-than-life personalities can. I will be working the Bacardi "Win Your Way to the Front" pre-fight party to offer diehard fans a chance to win the best seat in the house with complimentary food and Bacardi beverages.

God has certainly blessed me and I can't be thankful enough.

Miller Weldmaster is a global company with locations in Europe, the UK, Australia, Chile, New Zealand, Russia, the Netherlands and more. I was invited to visit their offices to meet several of the friendly employees, watch machine demonstrations and sit with some of their key executives to teach me the ropes and methods of Miller Weldmaster. It was an exciting trip and as they explained, I will never look at another awning or raft the same ever again.

Look for me in Charlotte, North Carolina as I present Miller Weldmaster and their three new Extreme Seam line of welding machines to everyone at the IFAI show. I have a fun and informative presentation (equipt with microphone for all to hear) that will be a highlight of the show.

Saturday night is the unclothed Mixed Media Runway Event at Sammy's in the Flats featuring wearable art in which artists and designers collaborate to present wearable art presentation in a runway extravaganza. A cool, underground, edgy event featuring 20 models, special effects and never before seen creations.

Although it is tough to see from the black and white photos, it was very sunny and pretty outside (If only the wind would have taken a backseat). I think the Salem, AZ photoshoot was one of the only photoshoots that didn't cause goosebumps from either a brisk wind or fan. We were able to have a successful photoshoot regardless of the wind and waved to a few passers-by who wanted to check out what was happening and catch a glimpse.

Giving Back - The Special Olympics Fund Raiser

Cheerleaders, videographers, bagpipes, the mayor, local businesses and a crowd full of family members, friends and residents filled the stadium to support Special Olympics and its athletes during the annual police versus fire department football game. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program. The police and fire departments are included in that special group of donors leading the community effort to raise more than nine thousand dollars this year from ticket sales, raffles, and donations.

I am honored to be a part of this event each year - not only to see my friends on the police department, but to witness the generosity and sportsmanship of the event - and to give more than my annual donation to Special Olympics. My role this year was that of a photographer. I enjoyed being on the 'other side' of the camera and catching my notorious up close and personal shots of not only the players, but the Special Olympics athletes as well (although I managed to pass the camera once or twice to get myself in some of the shots). The Special Olympics movement includes more than 2.25 million athletes who train and compete in 30 sports through more than 200 Programs in more than 160 countries around the world.

I'm pleased to announce the photoshoot for "Salem, AZ" has finally taken place! I want to thank all of you for your devoted interest and inquiries. I can't speak of my amazement or appreciation enough.

To give you more insight into the "Salem, AZ" project, where I am the lead character Kerry Connelly, I thought I would post some notes from Nik Havert (and of course pictures!) on the recent photoshoot. Sometimes the inside details give the best, and most fun, insight. As for the "Salem, AZ" Team? Let's just say I appreciate each of you for your time, efforts, support and for choosing lil' ol' me. ;)

Notes from Nik Havert:

Holy effing ess.

It's not every day I get asked to help dress a model, let alone a model dressed like a character I co-created with Paul Schultz.

I drove to meet with Nicole McClain and her photographer pal, Bruce Gates, to shoot "a discfull of photos" of Nicole dressed as Kerry Connelly - the lead character from "Salem, AZ." We had the entire costume, apart from the jacket, which Nicole forgot at home, but that didn't matter. She was stunning. The resemblance was uncanny. There is no other word for it.

Nicole had her replica .45 revolver. My good pal, Sherm, loaned me several of his Old West replica guns: a double-barreled shotgun, a Winchester rifle, two .45 revolvers with holsters, and two Josey Wales-style .44 revolvers. I also brought some stuff along for us to play with during the shoot: a huge Bowie knife, an old bullwhip, and a prop witch's broom from our Halloween decorations.

I got to be Nicole's dresser for the shoot, adjusting the spurs on her high heeled fetish shoes, tying down her .45's holster to her thigh, moving hair out of her eyes, and the like. She didn't have to twist my arm to do it, that's for sure, but it gave me a new appreciation for modeling. She was a trooper, and sweat it out under bright lights for two hours, often holding awkward positions and sometimes several heavy firearms while doing it. Some of the shots had her wearing a black wool serape while under the lights. I told her I'd buy her the biggest margarita she wanted after we were done, and she smiled and said that wasn't necessary. "This is what I do," she said, a consummate professional all the way.

We took almost four hundred photographs. I brought along two books on spaghetti westerns which featured many shots from various films and copies of vintage movie posters. We used a lot of these for certain poses and ideas. A personal favorite was a take on a Spanish poster for "For a Few Dollars More" in which Nicole is crouched and stepping on my outstretched arm and picking up my dropped revolver.

We did shots with and without witch hat, with and without gloves, and with and without serape. We did shots of her standing, crouching, and sitting (on an old wooden beer box). We did shots of her with one revolver, two revolvers, and three revolvers. We did shots of her with rifle, knife, bullwhip, and multiple handguns. It was a great time.

The whole session was video taped, and Nicole plans to put segments from it on YouTube and Myspace. We have many great shots that could be used for several covers, and enough for at least one pin-up book. Paul will have enough photo reference material to last him several issues. I plan on posting some of the photos after we get the new laptop PC.

In other Pickle Press news, Bill Messner-Loebs may have his artwork for "665 Mystery Road" finished by the time the Mid-Ohio-Con gets here. I've also sent in my table fee for that show, and Paul Schultz plans on being in attendance. I have a couple things I'd like to have published for the show, but I'll hold those details back for now in case they don't pan out by the time November 24th gets here. However, I will say that Nicole hopes to be at the show in costume, so that should be enough to get you to Columbus that weekend.

I plan on sending in my table fee for the Phoenix show soon. I'd like to have "Ninja Nympho Roommate" printed by then, as that show has a big manga-loving crowd and I think the book would sell like hotcakes there. Joe should have the inks done in a couple months, if all goes well.

Feedback represents the opinions of other members, and is not the opinion of Model Locate staff. Green Feedback is "positive" feedback or "higher than normal" ranking from other models, photographers and members. Red Feedback is "negative" feedback or "lower than normal" ranking from the same groups of individuals.

The major factor in ratings is if the rating is higher than what the person giving the feedback normally gives. Example: Sally gives a "best ever," but Sally gives everyone a "best ever." Another Birthday Around the Corner...

Is it possible another year has gone by? Yes. Insert deep breath here.

Regardless of age, life is what you make of it. Whether we turn 18, 28, or 38, if you are happy in your life, age need not apply. Life does have twists and turns - for better, for worse - and you wonder what will be at the end of the rollercoaster ride. Fair enough.

I once read, "Once you accept that life is difficult, life isn't as difficult anymore." Think about that for a moment.

So if you are celebrating the month of the Gemini with me or if your birthday isn't for another six months, this is my philosophy: Be grateful of your "new age" because next year you will be faced with this same situation again (yet another year older) wishing you could come back to this very point in time. Take a moment to breathe in the fresh air, feel the sun against your skin, and thank the Lord for the blessings He has given to you - and the ones He has not.

Spring Brings Rain and Opportunity

Between rain, snow, and sunshine, I have no idea which way the world is spinning anymore. Lights, Camera, and a Ton of Action

You've asked about them, so I've decided to release a few. Here are some shots from the photoshoot for the action shots.

My only wish was that I could have had those little razor blades shooting out from the back of my arms (can we do anything about that, Billy?). . . oh yes, and that it would stop raining.

My amazing++ mother always asked me, "If someone told you jump off a bridge, would you do it?" Of course not, Mom. However, what if a photographer asks me to jump over a two-story railing wearing 3 inch heels? Sorry Mom, you and I never covered that one. I had to do it.

See the "2" in the background? It really was the second story (And no, I will not be posting pics of the landing, but no worries, it was a soft one)!

Lip gloss is essential for destroying villians . . . and to help us shine while we explained to the police we would be "finishing up soon." This shot was taken as I was watching them approach us for the second time.

My Memoirs of a Geisha: The Latest Photoshoot

Hair pinned and pulled, face painted and powdered, I slipped into a 38-year-old Vietnamese pure silk gown originally crafted and worn by a real Vietnamse woman.

While Geisha women are Japanese, rather than Vietnamese, we wanted to capture the essence of the Geisha women. "Gei" means arts or performance in Japanese. "Sha" means people. Geisha are professional hostesses who entertain guests through various performing arts. Geisha girls and women are not ordinary hostesses and are not prostitutes. Geisha girls and women are trained in a number of traditional skills; Japanese ancient dance, singing, playing a three stringed instrument called shamisen, flower arrangement, wearing a kimono, tea ceremony, calligraphy, conversation, alcohol serving manners, and more. Geisha girls and women are talented Japanese women who patiently go through extensive training.

Young girls who wish to become a geisha girl are usually introduced to an o-chaya through someone who has a connection to the teahouse. The head woman of an o-chaya, called okami, interviews the girl with her parents, explaining how the training goes. If the okami accepts the girl as an apprentice to her o-chaya, the girl can begin her training immediately and live in the o-chaya if she has graduated from a middle school. Once a girl becomes a geisha trainee, she can't quit for 5 to 6 years. While helping with the chores and errands of the house, the young girl learns customs and social skills and begins music and dance lessons.

Bikini Bike Wash Update!

Nicole McClain Holds the Ace Card

This is Paul's first attempt at the 'Ace of Diamonds' postcard. "I realize it hides most of Nicole/Kerry's face (and we certainly don't want that)," Paul says, "but I wanted to try the 'looking through the bullet hole' effect. The next one will be closer to the original photograph so we can punch a hole where the bullet hole is. Somehow I want to fit her six-gun into the picture and her forelock here kinda looks like a 'Snidely Whiplash' mustache this time around."

Nicole McClain Surrounded

I was surrounded by talent at the Motor City convention in Detroit with names like Dave Nestler, Tommy Castillo, Billy Tucci, Marc Wolfe . . .

You know Dave Nestler, famous for his glamour, pinup and erotic art and close to me for his latest work where I was featured as the "painter"in Bored of Education. Keep your eyes and ears open for he will add writer and producer to his credentials for his erotic thriller by Realm Entertainment based on his Blonde and Gagged art series. One savvy, hott chic painting other hott chics? That's only the start of the story line from the script written by Dave Nestler himself.

Tommy Castillo, known for Batman and his dark humor, he is currently revamping the look of Batman Detective Comics and Legends of the Dark Knight for DC Comics. Gaming artist as well, Tommy has also created artwork for Wizards of the Coast, Kenzer & Company and Z-Man Games and the cover for Tony DiGerolamo's Complete Mafia for d20 to be released in November 2006. Of course, he was also recently discovered drawing dragons and dinosaurs on beer steins that have been added to my collection of Tommy Castillo pieces. Do the ideas leap out from the depths of the woods that surround him in his picturesque home? My dreams are vivid enough, but maybe I'll find out more during the project we are working on together; details to be released in the upcoming weeks.

Billy Tucci, graduate of the New York's Fashion Institute of Technology and former paratrooper, is the award-winning creator, writer and artist of the graphic novel series Shi. Through Billy his company, Crusade Fine Arts, Ltd., Shi is printed in six languages, has sold more than 4 million comic books and grossed over 25 million dollars worldwide. Producer Mimi Polk Gitlin (Thelma & Louise, Trapped) currently holds the option on Shi for a major motion picture. Tucci is writing the screenplay with Kevin Bernhardt (Art of War, Black Friday) and will serve as Executive Producer. He has been featured in The New York Times, NY Daily News, Newsday, Elle, Playboy, E!, ABC, NBC, Fox and this list goes on. I hope to exchange more hunting stories with him as I will be the model for his new Marvel character, Tarantula (see sketch above, 4th from the left). More updates on this later.

Marc Wolfe is known for his tactical and law enforcement art, but has a flipside, as he retains the interests of other fans with his detailed depiction of comic characters and movie actors and actresses. More later on a project we are working on together that has an ironic twist . . .

Here is the most recent coloring of Kerry Connelly for the Salem, AZ book. Joe did a fabulous job and suprised us all with the red, but positively striking, shirt for Kerry.

Further updates include a belt of conchos that was purchased in Tombstone, Arizona for the hatband and a possible choker for myself. My black leather witch hat has been created and even includes the braided leather detail circling the brim and crooked notch at the top:

Kerry Mural by Nicole McClain

It began with the idea from Nik and Paul that myself and one of my murals would be pictured on the cover and possibly inside the cover of one of the Salem, AZ comic books. I thought to myself, rather than show one of the Disney murals or the random requests I have drawn and painted for clients, wouldn't it be great to have one that relates to the comic? Kerry Connelly herself? Absolutely.

Paul was ecstatic about the idea and I know he has been in waiting to see what I've come up with . . . me too. I've always wanted my murals to be mobile and it came apparent to me that afterwards, clients wanted them mobile as well as to take them with them if they moved or rearranged furniture. Paul thought the mobility would work great for conventions as well. Enough said, I was sold on the idea. Mind you, it is my first mural on canvas (all of the others have been created and cast on walls only) so it was almost like working with a new medium. However, the canvas allowed me to create a unique twist by adding in a background element where I did not have to worry about where the background would "end" (it just "ends" at the edge of the canvas).

Nicole McClain as Kerry Connelly is Coming to Life

The crew and development team for the Salem, AZ comic book are in full swing scouring the San Antonio area in hopes to find my hatband, witch hat and spurs for my fancy shoes. The Pentagram belt buckle is in the mix as well and the most difficult part of the costume is the devil's head shirt clasp as this is the creative and original idea of the artist, Paul Schultz. He is drawing up schematics so the unique symbol can be created for the first time.

Measurements are due from yours truly, so it looks like I'll be hitting the gym harder than ever so I can be sure my waistline matches that of the illustration (insert smile here).

Nicole McClain Meets Cast and Crew

Tonight will mark the meeting of the cast and crew of the upcoming up all night television show, Chiller Theatre at the Haunted Hollow.

You've seen similar performances before: television programs across the waves in late hours of the day hosted by a male or female having some fun cooking a seasonal entree bewteen breaks of watching "Sixteen Candles."

But this one has a twist. Haunted Hollow takes the vampire out of the gothic genre and does a makeover into glamour queens similar to how Cassandra Peterson glorified herself as Elvira and became the horror movie hostess for KHJ-TV in Los Angeles with the help of make-up artist/costume designer Robert Redding.

Haunted Hollow will be an up all night television show on Time Warner Cable, Cox Cable, and Adelphia cable in 2006 hosted by myself with five cohosts and eye-candy (to be announced)with special guest stars and interviews.

Nicole McClain as Kerry Connelly in 'Salem, AZ'

I have recently entered into an agreement with Pickle Press to be the live model for their upcoming comic Kerry Connelly in Salem, AZ. Frankly, I am flattered because the character in my eyes resembles Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft format.

It's about a six-shooting witch in the old west and it combines different genres: spaghetti westerns, sorcery, sci-fi, horror, and a little cheesecake too. The main character is Kerry Connelly, who enjoys using her magic and Colt .45 revolver to protect the town her ancestors founded when they escaped from the Salem witch trials and fled to Arizona.

The first storyline is slated for two issues.The plot revolves around an abandoned coal mine full of vicious mole men who worship a giant gem that they use to hypnotize their captured human slaves and keep them in a zombie-like trance. The villains of the story are a sadistic doctor of psychology, Dr. Archak, and his band of escaped mental patients.

The first issue is 40 pages, and the second issue will be at least 24 interior pages. The plan is to have the first issue completed before August 2006 so it can be submitted to some key comic book companies at the Wizard World Chicago convention.

The author, Nik Havert from Nappanee, Indiana, has been writing some kind of fiction since he was about twelve years old. He started out with a story about talking animals at a zoo and has since gone on to self-publish comic books about women in love with superheroes, vampires running rampant in Chicago, vice-loving medieval mercenaries, and an EPA agent who is somehow still alive after being shot in the head and dumped into a lake.

Nik writes because, as he likes to say, "I have to get all these ideas out of my head so I can have room for more." He has three journals and a bulging folder full of story ideas, and he gets more every week. His future plans include publishing a horror comic book anthology entitled Mysterious Mansion, which will be a big salute to Bronze Age horror comics, self-publishing a novel of some of his short stories, and self-publishing this wild spaghetti western comic book, Salem, AZ.

Paul Schultz, the illustrator for "Salem, AZ," says, "I've been drawing since I could hold a crayon and I've been into comic books since before I could read, so sooner or later the two obsessions were bound to collide. Nik and I crossed paths about two years ago and have been working closely together ever since. "Salem, AZ," for instance, is what happens when two men take a five hour roadtrip through the no-man's-land between Nappanee, IN and Columbus, OH."

In the end, Paul says, "I'm also working on a few of my own projects as well as dabbling in painting thanks to the encouragement of my wife Barbi, a painter in her own right. I've dallied in short stories and played around with novel writing, but, sooner or later, come back to comic books. My wife and children, who are the reasons for everything I do."

Bow Hunt, 2005 Buck

If you have ever listened to a group of hunters talk about their famous hunts or their, "This one time," stories, you've noticed that most of them begin with, "It was just getting dark..." or, "It just started to snow..." or, "It was just getting light out."

Mine didn't start out that way.

It was going to be a hunt that I almost quit as it not only began with a little bit of a late start but when I reached my stand, the strap to pull back my bowstring snapped and I had to run back out of the woods to get another strap. On my way back into the woods, the sun was already breaking and I spooked a deer. I thought I ruined my chances.

Once I finally settled in my treestand, two bucks about 80 yards out headed toward each other, one coming in from each side. They met each other and headed along my right side but they were too far for a shot.

Awhile later, a large doe came down from the slashings about 125 yards out and headed south up near the trail. I grunted but after she failed to respond, I bleated a few times and she came in. She sauntered in about 40 yards and I waited for her to take one more step out from beyond the trees. Suddenly she was spooked and took off back toward the slashings. I set my bow down and sighed.

Twenty minutes later a doe walked in my direction and stood within 30 yards of my stand. However, she was too small to shoot so I just watched her circle around for a while and let her pass.

I had seen four deer at this point, more in one day than I have seen any other day all season. I was sure that my luck was going to run out if it hadn't already.

Not more than 15 minutes later, a buck was headed toward my stand to the left. He came within 50 yards of my stand behind some trees and brush and then began to meander back up the slope to my rear left.

He was about 60 yards out when I grunted. He stopped in his tracks. He looked around and then started up the slope again. He reached 70 yards and I grunted again but he kept going. I grunted once more, now 80 yards out, and he stopped once again in his tracks. He circled back and ran from behind me to ahead of me on the left side.

I grunted. He moved closer.

I grunted. He moved closer, now 60 yards.

I grunted. He moved closer, now 40 yards.

I drew my bow and waited. There he was, 25 yards away directly facing me, staring me down as I pointed my bow at him. He snorted trying to get me to respond in some way. He stomped his foot thinking I would somehow move and he would discover my identity. We stared at each for what seemed an eternity. He turned broadside and I took my shot.
